Getting started
You can start using O-Care at any time, even if you have been using the water already. You could run a pipe or system cleaner before you start, but you will need to refill the hot tub with fresh water. It takes a little more work, but you begin from a clean base. This is also explained in the manual inside the box.
For most hot tubs, two things. First, a sanitizer — chlorine or bromine — to kill bacteria. Second, something to keep the water balanced and clean, such as a pH adjuster and a water care product like O-Care that reduces sediment and the amount of sanitizer you need. You don’t need a cabinet full of separate products to keep water clear and comfortable.
A short weekly routine covers most hot tubs: add your water care product, check and adjust pH, and keep your sanitizer at its target level. Drain and refill with fresh water every 3 to 4 months. With O-Care, the weekly step is adding number 1, then 2, and running the pumps — most owners spend only a few minutes a week on water care.
Most customers follow a simple two-step weekly routine. Step 1: add the correct amount of O-Care 1, then 2, based on your water volume, and run the pumps. Step 2: check and correct your pH and sanitizer level.
A box of O-Care lasts 2 to 5 months depending on the volume of your hot tub. Check your water volume and find the matching amount on the dosing chart, which is on the bottle and in the manual. You always add the same amount of O-Care number 1 as number 2. For example, a 396 gallon (1,500 litre) hot tub needs 5.1 oz (150 ml) of number 1 and 5.1 oz (150 ml) of number 2.
That is not a problem. Just run the pumps for better mixing. Adding number 1 first only makes O-Care dissolve more easily; if you added number 2 first, the water may simply take a little longer to clear.
Yes. O-Care is made up of minerals and is not harmful, even if the water is still slightly cloudy right after you add it. The cloudiness clears on its own as the pumps circulate the water.
O-Care is based on a blend of mineral salts that work with your sanitizer to keep the inside of your hot tub clean. They help loosen the sediment and biofilm that build up on surfaces — a main cause of high sanitizer demand, cloudy water, scaling, scum lines, and skin and eye irritation. O-Care is phosphate-free and fragrance-free, and it is not a sanitizer itself, so you keep using a small amount of chlorine or bromine alongside it. The exact formulation is proprietary, but the minerals are diluted in a large body of water and are gentle on skin in normal use.
Using a sanitizer with O-Care
Over time, most people use less. Because the hot tub stays much cleaner, your overall chemical use can decrease by up to 78%. You keep your pH and sanitizer at the same target levels as before — you simply need less to get there.
The cleaner your water stays, the less sanitizer it needs. Showering before you get in, keeping the water balanced, and reducing the sediment and biofilm that drive up sanitizer demand all help. O-Care is built around this: by keeping the inside of the tub clean, your overall chemical use can decrease by up to 78%, while you keep chlorine or bromine at safe levels.
Chlorine works faster and is the more commonly used of the two. Bromine works across a wider pH range, which is why some people prefer it. O-Care works well with either.
Water balance basics
Sanitizing means adding a product like chlorine or bromine that kills bacteria in the water.
Balancing describes the make-up of your water. The most important factors for spa water are pH (how acidic or basic the water is), total alkalinity, and calcium hardness.
pH is the scale that tells you how acidic or basic the water is. In a hot tub it should sit between 7.2 and 7.8.
Start with just the pH level. In most cases that is enough when you begin with fresh water.
Common water problems
Cloudy water is usually caused by fine particles, body residue, unbalanced water, or a sanitizer level that is too low. Check and correct pH and sanitizer first, and clean or replace the filter. Loosening the sediment that clouds the water is where a product like O-Care helps, so the filter can clear it. Persistent cloudiness after balancing often points to a filter or biofilm issue.
A musty or unpleasant smell usually signals bacteria, biofilm, or organic build-up in the water or pipework, often when the sanitizer level has dropped too low. Restore your sanitizer to its target level, clean the filter, and if the smell persists, run a pipe or system cleaner and refresh the water. Keeping the tub clean with regular water care helps prevent the build-up that causes odour in the first place.
Skin irritation in a hot tub is often caused by biofilm, sediment, and a high sanitizer demand rather than the sanitizer alone. Keeping the water clean and balanced, and using less sanitizer, makes it gentler. O-Care’s mineral blend is non-irritating and fragrance-free, and many users tell us their skin feels noticeably softer and the water feels silkier since switching to it.
Hard water has a high mineral content that can leave scale on surfaces and equipment, and it can make the water cloudy or foamy and harder to keep clear. Keeping the water balanced and removing build-up regularly both help. O-Care works to loosen and help prevent the sediment and scale that hard water leaves behind, which keeps surfaces cleaner and water easier to manage.
Is O-Care right for me?
O-Care makes water care much easier, but no single product does everything. Balancing water and sanitizing water are two different jobs. O-Care keeps the tub clean and reduces how much sanitizer you need, but you still keep a sanitizer and a pH adjuster on hand to keep the water safe and balanced.
